Preparation | Measuring for Sod | > Installation | Maintaining a Sod Lawn
Step One
Start laying sod along the longest straight edge, do not overlap or leave gaps. Stagger pieces so seams form a brick-like pattern. Use Grass Farm sod knives to cut around borders, trees, and sprinkler heads. In hot weather, water lightly after every 200 sq. ft. is installed to prevent excessive drying and shrinkage.
Step Two
Water lightly, then roll sod to bring it into close contact with prepared soil. Rolling eliminates airspace between sod and soil.
Step Three
Watering is the most important aspect of sod transplanting! Immediately after installation, sod must be watered 3 times daily to deliver 1/4 inch with each watering for about 2 weeks. Try to get all waterings done by 3 p.m. with no evening waterings. Place cups around the yard and time how long they take to catch 1/4 inch of water. Then you can determine how long to water per cycle. In hot windy weather, it may be necessary to water even more often to avoid wilting and sod damage. Remember to adjust watering after the initial 10-14 day period - see Maintenance under the Installation/Care section of our website.
